Rick Kanar

Personal Biography

Richard Kanar is a Master of Social Work student at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in Community, Organization, and Social Action (COSA). His academic and professional focus includes advancing racial and social equity, improving access to mental health services, and advocating for inclusive policies that support transgender and other marginalized communities. Richard approaches social work through a strengths-based and justice-oriented lens, integrating both macro and micro perspectives. He is particularly interested in how systems theory, critical race theory, and community organizing can inform policy change and empower underserved populations. Rooted in lived experience and guided by a strong commitment to equity, Richard values collaboration, education, and advocacy as tools for transformative change. He is dedicated to creating spaces that uplift marginalized voices and dismantle systemic barriers, while fostering resilience and collective empowerment across communities.
